On the Loudthfaire guestbook I noticed someone asked what ever happened to Suzi Quatro.
You could be forgiven in the USA to think she went off to be a mother and gave up her music as she doesn't get any exposure in her home country but in fact she still tours regularly in Europe and Australia. I think she may take her music half-heartedly and has other interests nowadays, like giving oral speeches on spirituality and hanging out with her teenage kids who always go on tour with her. They must influence her music tastes too as I heard her on a radio interview admit she listens to Take That.

Sometimes her daughter even gets up onstage with her Mum and sings. Anyway, I am no expert on Suzi Quatro but I can tell you about the time I saw her live in 1996, which promised to be a 70's rock legend spectacle but in fact it turned out I was watching some sort of choreographed lounge act. Suzi has always been known to 'rock hard' but nowadays she is much more suited to the casinos she finds herself playing in. Sure, at age 50 she is a great front person who still knows how to work the audience, and look like she is enjoying herself. She also has that backlog of hits to bombard us with but what was she thinking fronting up with a dodgy band and blending those songs into medleys - which is sacrilegious. Just when you're getting into "Devil Gate Drive" they cut it short and launch into "Can the Can". Get a verse and chorus of that song only to jump to "48 Crash"! What's that all about? There is a guitarist onstage but he could be a prop for all we know as you can't hear a damn thing coming out of his instrument as he is drowned out by a saxophone player and 2 trumpet players, who help out with handclaps and backing vocals. A drummer who looks like he just stepped out of a Richard Simmons video complete with poxy striped sweat bands on his arms and head should have been left at home. Not that I would prefer to see Suzi playing with a band full of studs. These guys just looked plain ridiculous.

Decked out in her patent leather jumpsuit and low-slung bass guitar, Suzi struts around the stage and can still belt out spine-tingling screams but it all seems un-spontaneous and planned. About 10 of her old hits are given the brass treatment along with some new stuff.

Suzi has a stint on the drums and plays some keyboards on a couple of songs off her latest release (at the time) called "What Goes Around", which were pretty mellow. Majority of the audience seems to be made up of bikies who are rambunctious thanks to the ale but run to the bar when the slower, newer songs are played.
Maybe I am being harsh as the Suzi Q fans around me seemed to be enjoying themselves but I found it rather uninspiring and cheesy. If only the guitar was louder in the mix. If only the band had looked cooler. If only she didn't turn classics into montages. If only it was still the 70's. I for one was disappointed but guess I am lucky to catch her live as I bet there are many out there who wish they could see her now.
