Neurotic Outsiders CD

Maverick Records 1996
by Succubi

Neurotic Outsiders are sort of a 'supergroup' made up of layabout rock stars who got together to play some songs for fun. Luckily Maverick Records (maybe one of them fucked Madonna) had the sense to release their CD which has become one of my all time favourites. The band consists of Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum (Guns and Roses) and John Taylor (Duran Duran) and is exactly what you expect when the Sex Pistols meet GnR's with brash power chords, mindless lyrics and smut.
Steve Jones writes 7 of the 12 tracks and sings the majority but they tend to share the vocal duties around and its anyones guess who is who besides Jones distinctive voice. The infectious melodies and caustic humour entertain with "Nasty Ho" kicking off the album with Jones pulling off the wry macho lyrics about an encounter with a prostitute. (You think I came/ I'm premature ejaculation trained/ You don't mean a thing/If my dick don't swing/Make my ding dong ring).
Similar rocker and first single "Jerk" and Japanese single "Angelina" are other stand outs along with the anthemic and chunky riffed "Good News" which makes fun of someone with AIDS who is still out fucking around.
They do a cover of The Clash classic "Janie Jones" which is mindblowing punk at its best and the same goes for "Revolution" which could be Sorum singing but I could be wrong. A couple of ballads thrown in like the depressing "Story of My Life", a gem called "Better Way" and an ode to the Sex Pistols members in the form of "Union" which is cleverly done. The album finishes with "Six Feet Under" sung by Duff which is pure GnR's.
This is a priceless CD that seemed to be overlooked when it first came out and should have been a major success for the band. Not sure if they intend to record follow up as they are probably too lazy to do one but if they ever did I would buy it the day it came out and get copies for everyone I know as Christmas presents.
