Rarely do I listen to the radio because most of the so-called "artists" that are given airplay are just talentless pretty people with millions of dollars and top-notch PR guys behind them. This is why it took me awhile to realize that Fiona Apple is more than that - this chick actually rocks! A friend recently brought her second cd, When the Pawn Hits...*, to my house and played it in my CD-ROM drive while surfing the 'net. I was slightly impressed, although very distracted. I later discovered that it was saved to my hard drive, so I listened to it again, with more focus, and was blown away. I immediately found an online music store and ordered this and her first album, Tidal. I'm still waiting for them to

arrive, so I've only heard When the Pawn Hits through my low-grade computer speakers, but I already know that Fiona Apple will soon become one of my many musical obsessions. Beyond the natural beauty and the cheesy, yet seductive "I've been a bad, bad girl" song that thrust this 19-year-old into the world of MTV in 1996, is a wise woman with a bluesy voice that puts most other Billboard chart-toppers to shame. When the Pawn Hits is a 'Pop' album that encompasses blues, jazz, rock, and poetry. The focus is on Apple's remarkable voice and honest words, with the delicate music perfectly complimenting her talents.

The best display of her skills is in her newest single, 'LIMP' - vulnerable cries of pain and melodic screams of rage, backed by funky music. 'Paper Bag' is a saloon-style song and 'I Know' is a classically simple ballad. Each song holds it's own, but this album is best when listened to in it's entirety. It will make you remember your insecurities and regrets, but then tells you that everything is okay...she is okay and you are okay.
