Squirrel Nut Zippers

(album) reviews

A couple years ago Yvette of Stone Fox and me did a music tape swap. Amongst other things, she made me a cool tape of old country/western bands and also a tape of a band that I'd heard of but never bothered to listen to: Squirrel Nut Zippers. I guess the name of the band bugged me more than intrigued me. As far as I can tell, this band only has vinyl - no CDs. So, the two ALBUMS Yvette taped for me are called 'Hot!' and 'The Inevitable'. And, on a personal note, I gotta say that I LOVE the fact that Yvette let the tape keep rolling as the needle on her turntable went off the
grooves at the end of each side of the albums, and left the sound of the turntable clicking off on there too.Okay, so, guess what...this is a great band. Ordinarily, I don't like to compare an artist with another artist but I'd be doing the female vocalist, Katharine Whalen, an injustice if I didn't rave about her dead-on tribute to Billie Holiday.
She's captured Holiday's unique voice so precisely that I might have questioned the true identity of this vocalist if I didn't know better. A real reincarnation. Oh, and there's a guy singer too.
In conclusion: If you ever wanna drink too many martini's and have an orgy and you need appropriate music in the background...these two albums are the ones to play. It's the Devil's music, I'm pretty sure...but you can dance and do so much more to it! It possesses the soul. It entices the inhibited wallflower to take off clothes and slither up to a total stranger and wiggle their tongue in unexplored orifices.
