PILLBOX
'Gimme What I Want' (2000)
'Sterilise Me' (2001)
In the interview with vocalist Susan Hyatt else where at this site she describes the sound of her band pretty accurately. It's true that the raw guitar sound keeps Pillbox from falling into the electronica heap. But, what Susan did not mention is that her songs are extremely catchy and oh so rhythmic. There's definitely commercial potential but believe it or not it comes without compromising the free spirit of the artist. Quite a fancy trick.
Her pop sensibility weaves itself in and out of her punk rock posture, which bleed into heavy rock riffs from time to time. Susan's songwriting is cleverly pieced together. Subliminally she introduces an orchestra of sound to the ear with these two collections. And, sometimes, the elaborate and impressive cacophony/beautiful sounds are all within one song.

Susan's voice is strong, sexy and at-the-edge volatile yet she has eloquent control of it. Critics have compared her to some heavy chicks on the radio but to my ears her voice is unique. She has that hard-to-find mixture of vulnerability and angst that perfectly compliments the candid love stories she writes and the angry political stance she holds. In fact, her passionate words to the boys and the girls in her life are like pages out of her diary. They make you want to kick someone's ass for her, and then walk her all the way to the door at the end of the night and give her a sweet kiss on the hand and then her cheek...and then actually call her the next day.
