And in between each song are snippets of dialog from The Osbourne television show - kinda funny, kinda predictable. I'm just gonna go with the assumption that this weird album was put out solely to give Kelly a platform for her singing debut. The kid is talented and I don't see how or why everyone is being so cautious. How could her handlers think that a cute, talented young girl wouldn't do well? They should have just released a full length Kelly Osbourne album instead. This tease is rather annoying.
In any case, Kelly's re-make of "Papa Don't Preach" is the third track and it's the best thing about this compilation. While the Osbourne family camp knew all along that Kel was an explosion waiting to happen, I think the rest of us are still in shock. How could a potty mouth brat that loses her rock star dad's credit card and sleeps in both top and bottom cotton PJs turn out to be such an awesome singer - and a total hottie on top of that. This chick has the world waiting breathlessly. She's young, beautiful, talented, rowdy, hotheaded, unapologetic, and has a pure rockstar in the making aloofness to her personality. And did I mention she's a sexy little dyed hair babe?
Okay, the music. There's some kinda studio effect on her vocals but Kelly's singing ain't buried under it. Her star shines through loudly. I don't know where she found that deep voice but it's a nice surprise. I mean, she sounds like such a whiner on TV. It's when she breaks out in the tormented cry/sing thing that she proves she has both the pout and the power to rock us silly some day soon. Her built-in angst does wonders for this song. It sounds like a difficult arrangement to sing too - all revamped and up-tempo and shit. "Papa Don't Preach" now means a lot more as a pop song coming from the innards of a 17 year old. And I absolutely totally fucking love the high-pitched scream of terror - which IS buried - that Kelly does right after the scathing guitar solo. Listen hard, it's there.
I think Kelly has a couple if not all the guys from Incubus backing her on this track. And I love that band anyway. So, the rumor is that Kelly Osbourne will release a full-length album this Fall. I heard an October date. Sounds like Kelly is doing what she wants - becoming a pop star. I hope she keeps her sassy wits about her when it comes to writing and producing. [Her baby bro Jack produced "Papa Don't Preach"] And I hope Kelly is able to negotiate a record deal that allows her to have control of songwriting. As cute as she is I really don't wanna have to settle for a punk rock Britney puppet. I hope Kelly Osbourne takes charge of her career the way she takes charge of valet parking attendants on Sunset Boulevard.
