NEKO CASE and her Boyfriends
'Furnace Room Lullaby' (2000)
Okay, so I was sittin' in this bookstore/café/juice joint/organic food store pretending to read the scandalous tell-all book "All About 'All About Eve'" but I was actually trying to listen in on some chick's conversation about how she thinks she's gay now becuz ... and that's when a song came on the jukebox. It stole my attention away. It stole the breath out of me. And it stole my heart.
After a bit of investigating I found out the song was "Twist The Knife" by a chick named Neko Case. This is a great record. Grassroots music is finely represented these days by singers like Neko Case, not to mention Lucinda Williams...and where the HELL is Maria Mckee anyhow?! You can hear it in Neko's drawl and in her songwriting that she has a bad feeling about love ever securing a foothold in her life. Sometimes her country-western ditties reflect the sultry arrangements of the Patsy Cline era. Other times Neco's music and vocal work-outs get updated all the way to the 1970s, which in my opinion was the best time for country-western music making. Other hightlights on the CD are "Guided By The Wire" "South Tacoma Way" "No Need To Cry" and "Set Out Running".
