She started her rock-n-roll career as a fancy-fingered, metal-flaked guitarist in the mid-eighties and today without apologies has gracefully developed into a sometimes serene, sometimes funky, sometimes jazzy, sometimes downright grass roots guitarist with more than a hint of frenzied rock star heathen lurking about. Her name is Janet Robin and her first solo effort is Open The Door, on her own label Little Sister Records.Released in 1999, Open The Door is an excellent showcase for Janet's multiple personalities as a guitarist. The songs are radio-friendly but never lose creative license nor are they weighted down by an outsider's stringent ideas of compromise. Sounds as if she is singing and composing what comes natural. Janet is playfully and painfully blunt in her lyrics of love lost ("How Many Times Before"), love found ("Catch My Breath"), love questioned ("Say It One More Time"). And anyone who can slip in a mention of Robert DeNiro in a song ("Formosa Café") instantly wins my heart. With a charming vocal style and pop-oriented songwriting ability Janet Robin's next CD (due Spring, 2000) promises to be just as clever and pleasing to both the ear and heart. I've seen Janet perform live with her most excellent band and all I can say is an acoustic guitar in this woman's hands doesn't make her ponder solely upon her softer side - she still plays hard enough to break guitar strings. And we like that.Click here for more on Janet RobinOr type her name in a search box below and buy the cd. |
