JANET ROBIN
'Out From Under' (2001)
In writing about Janet Robin, I think I've said this once before. It's impressive to know what a talented guitarist this chick is yet she chooses not to hit the listener over the head with her guitar. Like the star of a movie her guitar work is in every scene but her writing is so perfectly scripted that although you hear pretty layers of guitar work throughout a song it never becomes annoying or offensive to the ears.
In fact, it makes you want to listen over and over because you didn't quite catch that fancy riff the first time around or that subtle hook, which is probably the exact reason you love the song.
She has successfully combined sweet acoustic songs with full-on in, your face blasts of rock and roll. And I love that she did a band-version of "Brownstone" and then at the end of the CD you can hear another version that she re-recorded with just an acoustic. This song is probably my fave track. Other tracks I like are "Second Look" "Just One Night" "Stand Alone" "Happiness" and the title track, "Out From Under". This tune I especially love cuz as it turns out I can totally relate to the shaky platform of a relationship that is either on its last leg or is just about to be revitalized because of rather than in spite of all the years of love, sweat and tears. What I like best about this one song is that with her words Janet perfectly captured the clarity of the moment that something is wrong and let's fix it before it's too late, and with her music she keeps it soft but upbeat and therefore hopeful.
While listening to this CD for the first time I felt a sort of 'alternative country' vibe begging to come through the rock and roll, and then I heard 'Brother'. It's got kind of a rockabilly beat. I would love to see Janet and band tour with Hank Williams III or Lucinda Williams.
