IMPERIAL TEEN
On (2002)
It took me like two weeks to get past the opening track, "Ivanka", when I first played this CD - the umpteenth release by this fucking cool band. That first track is so mesmerizing and addicting that I just kept it on repeat play. It's got this nervous energy thing going on, and it's kinda sexy in a fucked up way.
I finally realized I couldn't possibly write about this CD by only listening to one song. So I got to the second track, "Baby", and the same fucking thing happened! I kept it on repeat play - track 2 - for several days. And then I kept both tracks 1 and 2 on repeat play! I was obsessed in the worst way.
Lynn Perko, who usually is the drummer but sometimes switches to bass guitar, has been a friend of mine for the last ten years. Met her when she was with SISTER DOUBLE HAPPINESS. But I first became aware of her in 1982 when she was in the punk band THE WRECKS. We've been trying to hook up for a long-overdue interview for, like, the last 2 years. She's very busy, and I'm very flakey.
Okay, so Lynn sent me an advanced copy of 'On' quite a while ago and as I said I've been stuck on the opening tracks. Well, I finally listened to it in its entirety. And I'm not surprised that the rest of the CD is just as captivating. IMPERIAL TEEN has always had a knack for the hook. Remember that song they had on the soundtrack for movie Jawbreaker? ("She said yoo hoo...") My gawd, that song haunted my psyche forever.
This is such a great pop band. 'Pop' without pressure. 'Pop' without the stupidity. 'Pop' without the compromise. IMPERIAL TEEN marches to the fabulous beat of its own drummer - whom just happens to my one of my sweetest friends.
