GIRLSCHOOL
Girlschool (1992)
Show of hands...who knew Girlschool put out a new album?? Me either, and that's cuz they didn't. I somehow missed this self-titled album 10 years ago. It seems to be on a crappy little label called Communique - and I say crappy cuz doesn't look like a whole lot of money went into producing the artwork. But I guess it's the sound that is important, isn't it.
And this is one of the better sounding albums I've heard from Girlschool since Kelly Johnson left the band. The opening track starts out kind of ethereal, sweet, demure...and I seriously had a bit of a freak out. Shit! The band went out with a flop! Obviously, the feedback kicked in and the volume was turned up just on time. The rest of the album is loud and rowdy. It's gotta be one of their best ever cuz I mean what sounds better than slide guitar with a flanger? And there ain't one lame ballad here.
Okay, so, I know what to expect from vocalist Kim McAuliffe and drummer Denise DuFort cuz, shit, I've been listening to their brilliance since 1981 right. And I figured they'd have to have a kick ass bass player, which they do with a chick named Jackie Carrera. But, last time I heard guitarist Chris Bonacci I wasn't all that impressed. Maybe cuz I was still pissed off cuz Kelly was gone. Anyhow, Chris is kicking major ass here. In fact, the album reminds me a lot of the old Galschool sound that I love so much. The punk metal inspired speed, the raunchy guitar tone, and Kim's snotty vocals. Nothing polished here, babe. I'm sure Lemmy loves this record, and so do I. Cheers you lot!
