CAT POWER
'The Covers Record' (2000)
A chick named Chan Marshall is basically all there is to Cat Power, it seems. And she's spooky. She put out this record of all cover songs. I'm only familiar with maybe half the tunes but I get the feeling she's
reconstructed them all in her own morose mindset. You'd never recognize The Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction". I'm a huge Stones fan and I had to listen carefully to 'hear' the song. Chan Marshall is incredible. Another great cover is Dylan's "Paths of Victory".
The oddest cover and maybe the best one is the Fifties (or is it from the Sixties?) hit "Sea of Love". It's just kinda spooky. Reminds me of the theme to 'Hush, Hush Sweet Charolette' - a very creepy Bette Davis movie. Chan Marshall's voice is hauntingly quiet and perfectly moody with at times a built-in distortion box that is ever so slight but gives her performances even more character. I gotta go out and buy the rest of her catalog...stay tuned.
