Betty Blowtorch
'Are You Man Enough?'
Foodchain Records, 2001
Fuck political correctness, man. It's time to get back to reality - and that's where BETTY BLOWTORCH was taking us. The band was ready, willing and able to resuscitate the explicit world of sex, drugs, rock, and the devil. Emphasis on the word 'was'. But, more on that a little later.
Leader of the pack, singer/bassist Bianca Butthole literally screams her way through this CD (except for 2 songs) of loud and slutty and funny as fuck rock and roll. The song "Broken Hearts, Big Hair" is about the good ol' days of the heavy metal Sunset Strip circa 1986 - and it's dedicated to Lita Ford. "Size Queen" features a guest rap by Vanilla Ice, but don't let that stop you from buying this album. The song titles alone are worth the price of this record: "I Really Rock My World" "Hell on Wheels" "I Wish You'd Die" "Shut Up and Fuck" "I'm Ugly and I Don't Know Why" "Part Time Hooker".
Not only does BETTY BLOWTORCH display volume, power, and fabulous guitar work on Are You Man Enough? but this rowdy bunch of chicks was also able to maintain extremely catchy hooks and melodies. Songs like "Love/Hate" and "Strung Out" will haunt your head all day.
This band was on the verge of putting obnoxious rocker chicks back in the spotlight. Emphasis on the word 'was'.
The tragedy of BETTY BLOWTORCH: In the middle of the band's nationwide Fall tour with Nashville Pussy, the drummer and one of the guitar players abruptly quit. Not only did these two chicks quit the band they also took the van with all the equipment, and drove their lame asses home. Everyone is still waiting for an explanation for their fucked up shit. One thing that is pretty clear to people close to the band is that their manager may have instigated the idea of breaking up the band.
Bianca -who has always been well liked in the music world (on both coasts, no less) - sent out a call for help so that she and guitarist Blare N. Bitch wouldn't have to leave the tour. A lot of us in the music biz gave Bianca suggestions, which gave her hope. Ultimately, Jennifer 'Precious' Finch, of L7/OtherStarPeople fame, stepped in to play guitar. And a drummer friend named Dave sat in as well for the last few weeks of the tour. Blare and Bianca had two more gigs with this new ensemble on this rowdy rock tour before returning home to Hollywood to play a New Years Eve show at The Whisky. But Bianca would never make it home alive.
On the early morning of December 15, 2001 Bianca was killed in a car accident in New Orleans, Louisiana. I could go on and on about the drunk guy driving the car that Bianca was in. But today the sadness outweighs the anger. I'll leave the pissed off rant for another time. Maybe I'll try to find Blare and ask for an interview. Maybe I'll just crank up my favorite BETTY BLOWTORCH song "Shut Up and Fuck". Maybe I'll just sit in contemplation.
The rock world lost a cool band, and a cool chick. Rock on, B.
